100 questions to ask your parents and grandparents
One day you realise: I don't actually know what mum's teenage years were like. Or why grandpa left his home country. These 100 questions help you discover your parents' and grandparents' life stories before they are lost.
We put them together from the interview guide Eternal Echo has used to record life stories since 2023. They follow eight chapters of life, from childhood to legacy. You don't need to ask them all. One good question per conversation is often enough for an hour.

How to ask the questions
- Start small. "What did your childhood bedroom look like?" opens more doors than "Tell me about your life".
- Ask for pictures. Smells, sounds, places. Memories live in the senses.
- Let silence happen. The best answers often come after a pause. Don't rush to the next question.
- Follow up. "How did that feel?" and "And then?" are the most important questions of all.
- Respect boundaries. If someone doesn't want to talk about something, they don't have to. Leave the hard topics until trust is there.
- Record it. Notes lose the sound. The voice, the laughter, the accent become the most precious part later.
That is exactly what Eternal Echo is for: a caring interviewer asks these questions on the phone, listens, follows up gently and records everything. You don't have to prepare or transcribe a thing.
